Just A Thought To Ponder

Yesterday when I was walking my Sat. 10, I was listening to one of my favorite singers from the mid 60’s Petula Clark.  I love her voice and I can still see her “all the way from London England” on Ed Sullivan. I think she will be 80 in Nov.  I still of course see her in my mind as a young woman of 32 or so. She was actually much older than most pop stars of her time. I was around 15, Mary Riggin and I loved this “old woman” singer from England. Some where we had never been. I was on line watching “ Pet”. And began to wonder if Tori Birch is perhaps a fan as well. If one takes the time, as I often do. And look at old photos ,videos and the such you will see a real correlation between Tori’s  designs and the Givenchy influenced wardrobe  Ms Clark sports all through the late 60’s and early 70’s . In fact if one is to take a moment to look at the Givenchy logo you may see a great similarity between both designers’ logos. I wonder how it is possible to be sitting at ones desk and suddenly come up with such similarities with out looking at or studying the designer one is emulating. Now there is nothing wrong with being strongly influenced by the world around you, I know I certainly am. But what exactly is the design process how does one go about designing a sofa for example? I kind of think there all ready are sofas. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between ones seen on the floor of one well known designer’s boutique in SF and the American of Martinsville wood frame styles of the late 60’s early 70’s. If one can get hold of some footage of an old Hullabaloo TV dance show they could design an entire collection from about 5 minutes of footage. If I sound a bit bitter perhaps I am. I kind of wonder where the fashion and design world is headed. HG TV would have you believe an interior can be done single handedly in no more than 3 days. Design is a creative process, so does sitting down looking a photos and studying the designs of others and then “drawing up” a product that looks almost Identical to it mean you designed something or did you simply” draw it up” ? Don’t know exactly, but I kinda think I’m leaning in one direction….
